The Lake Zoar Authority is a multi-town organization consisting of representatives from the four towns that border the lake - Monroe, Newtown, Oxford, and Southbury. The Lake Zoar Authority is tasked with the goals of improving water quality and promoting safe boating on the lake.

The regular meeting of the Lake Zoar Authority was held Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at 7:00 p.m. at the Monroe Town Hall.

Gary Fillion, Chairman, called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm.

 

Secretary’s Report:

A motion to accept the minutes as read from the May 1, 2018 meeting was made by Bill May, seconded by Herb Garber; the motion was passed unanimously.

 

Public Comments:

None

 

Correspondence and News Clippings:

The Candlewood Lake Authority minutes and an article regarding The Leaps of Faith waterskiing clinic were circulated.

                               

Treasurer’s Report:

Bob Mouchantat, Treasurer, presented account balances. A motion to accept the Treasurers Report was made by Ed Kusinski, seconded by Dick Speer; the motion was passed unanimously.

                                                                                                                                             

Marine Patrol Report:

Regular patrols are underway. Rain and cooler temperatures have reduced the necessary hours of some patrols. It was noted the warning sing and cable crossing near the Shepaug Dam are again damaged.

 

Publicity/ Public Awareness:

No report.

 

Water Quality / Grants Report:

Gary Fillion, Chairman, reported that on June 5th the lake was chemically treated to reduce weed growth. A second treatment has already been budgeted and is tentatively planned for late summer, date to be announced.

 

Boats and Motors Report:

Dick Speer reported new fenders and dock lines have been purchased for the patrol boats. State Police radios are now installed on the boats.

 

Coast Guard Auxiliary Report:

None.

 

Grants:

Gary Fillion, Chairman, reported that First Light has awarded the LZA a grant for $10,000.00

 

Communication/Alert System:

Bill May has been in contact with the four towns to discuss options for an Emergency Contact System where residents can sign up for emergency notifications regarding Lake Zoar. There are currently some “Code Red” subscriptions in place by the towns. Strict regulations may be in place as to what will define and emergency. Options for other public service announcement subscriptions are to explored.

A motion to adjourn was made by Bill May, seconded by Herb Garber; the motion was passed unanimously. Gary Fillion, Chairman, adjourned the meeting at 8:01 pm
