The Lake Zoar Authority is a multi-town organization consisting of representatives from the four towns that border the lake - Monroe, Newtown, Oxford, and Southbury. The Lake Zoar Authority is tasked with the goals of improving water quality and promoting safe boating on the lake.

The regular meeting of the Lake Zoar Authority was held Tuesday, July 10, 2018, at 7:00 p.m. at the Newtown Senior Center, 14 Riverside Road, Sandy Hook, CT 06482.

Gary Fillion, Chairman, called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm.

 

Secretary’s Report:

A motion to accept the minutes as read from the June 5, 2018 meeting was made by Herb Garber, seconded by Jerry Isleib; the motion was passed unanimously.

 

Public Comments:

The LZA was encouraged to keep the website current and continue to submit public records in a timely manner at the Monroe Town Clerk’s Office.

 

Correspondence and News Clippings:

A newspaper article discussing the Southbury Board of Finance requiring an audit from the LZA was circulated.

                               

Treasurer’s Report:

Bob Mouchantat, Treasurer, presented account balances. A motion to accept the Treasurers Report was made by Dick Speer, seconded by Herb Garber; the motion was passed unanimously

                                                                                                                                             

Marine Patrol Report:

It was noted the warning sing and cable crossing near the Shepaug Dam remain down and hanging into the water along the eastern shoreline, First Light has been notified of the situation. Complaints of PWC exceeding the speed limit and riding close to other boats and docks were noted and will be presented to Sgt. Dan Semosky so he can inform the patrol drivers and officers.

 

Publicity/ Public Awareness:

Bill May presented options for upgrading the website. He will look into hosting options and a possible redesign of our current website. One mentioned goal would be to make the website mobile device friendly.

 

Water Quality / Grants Report:

Gary Fillion, Chairman, reported that on June 5th the lake was chemically treated and while no post treatment survey has been received LZA members agreed the treatment seems to have been successful. We discussed the potential of a second chemical treatment in August.

 

Boats and Motors Report:

Dick Speer reported new props are ordered for the boats. The current props are allowing the engines to rev too high. A change in prop pitch will correct the problem. A concern about patrol boats driving down the lake on the wrong side was noted and will be addressed. The addition of displaying the LZA website on the boats was also discussed.

 

Coast Guard Auxiliary Report:

None.

 

Grants:

Gary Fillion, Chairman, reported that First Light grant for $10,000.00 has been received

No report

New Business

Bob Mouchantat also mentioned the version of QuickBooks software we use needs to be updated for our accountant as well as an upgraded computer to run the program on.

A motion to adjourn was made by Frank Cavallo, seconded by Jerry Isleib; the motion was passed unanimously. Gary Fillion, Chairman, adjourned the meeting at 7:42 pm
