Warning: High Levels of Toxic Microcystin Found Near Sandbar

This week’s water quality tests have come back with an unusual spike in the Microcystin (AKA Blue Green Algae) levels near the sandbar. (Note: These samples are pulled from the cove adjacent to the sandbar, not directly from the sandbar.) The U.S. EPA and CT DPH currently advise a Microcystin threshold of 8.0 parts per billion for recreational waters. Testing of the samples collected yesterday are showing 17.804 parts per billion at this spot, which far exceeds safe levels. The LZA is recommending that you avoid swimming (including pets) in this area until the August 8th test results come back and show the levels have returned to a safe range. All other testing locations throughout Lake Zoar are showing at normal levels and are safe for all activities.
